How to Sleep Properly to Preserve Your Curls

As much as we love our curls, maintaining them can be quite a task. From picking the right products to using the right techniques, everything plays an important role in keeping our curls bouncy and healthy. But did you know that even your sleeping position can affect your curls? Yes, you read it right! Your sleep habits could be damaging your curls without you even realizing it.

In this blog post, we will discuss some tips on how to sleep to keep curls intact and prevent hair damage.

Why is Sleep Important for Curls?

Before diving into the tips, let’s first understand why sleep is important for curly hair. When we sleep at night, our body undergoes various processes of repair and restoration. Similarly, when it comes to our hair, nighttime is an opportunity for restoration too.

When we toss and turn during the night or use cotton pillowcases and sheets with rough textures; they cause friction between the scalp/hair follicles that can lead to tangles & breakage – which ultimately results in frizzy unruly looking curly locks in the morning.

Therefore sleeping correctly maintains natural curl patterns while preventing split ends from forming on individual strands due to constant rubbing against harsh fabrics/cottons found commonly on once favorite bed pillows!

Use Silk or Satin Pillowcases:

The easiest way to avoid hair damage while sleeping is by investing in silk or satin pillowcases. Unlike cotton pillowcases (which are rough), silk/satin cases have a smoother texture that reduces friction between your head/scalp and the fabricā€”meaning less tangling/frizzing of your precious coils overnight! Plus point: It also helps retain moisture within each strand of hair allowing for better hydration overall resulting in shinier healthier-looking locks upon awakening!!

Although there are many different types of silk/satin material options available online; most people recommend mulberry silk as it is breathable and soft. But, if investing in a new pillowcase does not fit your budget right now, consider wrapping your hair in a satin/silk scarf before sleeping instead.

Avoid Side or Stomach Sleeping:

Another way to keep curls intact while sleeping is by avoiding side or stomach sleeping positions. When we sleep on our sides/stomach, we put too much pressure on one side of the hair which can lead to flattening of curls and even breakage/tangling near the roots.

Try switching up your sleep position for your next night’s rest! Start with lying flat on your back with pillows positioned comfortably behind/underneath each shoulder blade; elevating yourself ever so slightly off the surface below – allowing gravity and weight distribution across head/scalp evenly throughout the night without any added pressure points affecting natural curl patterns!

Loosely Tie Your Hair:

If you prefer wearing loose hairstyles like buns/knots while sleeping, make sure they’re not too tight. Tight hairstyles lead to tension that could create stress points along individual strands – ultimately leading to split ends/breakages over time.

The key here is loosely tying all knots/buns ideally at the nape of your neck (away from root area). Alternatively, try experimenting with different hairstyles that offer low-tension options such as braids/cornrows etc., before bed!

Sleep plays an important role in maintaining healthy looking curly locks. By following these simple tips: use silk/satin pillowcases or scarfs; avoid side/stomach-sleeping positions; tie hair loosely when necessary- you can prevent overnight damage naturally leaving other worries aside regarding achieving perfect wavy bouncy ringlets every day! Remember always treat those tresses gently no matter what time of day it may be!
